Hanski distinguishes metapopulation ecology from (1) landscape ecology, which is more heavily empirical and which generally regards habitat suitability as a continuous rather than a discrete variable, and (2) spatial dynamics in continuous space, which is more heavily theoretical and concerned with complex patterns that are generated by population processes alone.

Extinction debt and species credit in boreal forests: modelling the consequences of different  Metapopulation, in ecology, a regional group of connected populations of a species. For a given species, each metapopulation is continually being modified by increases (births and immigrations) and decreases (deaths and emigrations) of individuals, as well as by the emergence and dissolution of local populations contained within it. Accessible to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, Metapopulation Ecology will be a valuable resource for researchers in population biology, conservation biology, and landscape ecology. The term metapopulation was coined by Richard Levins in 1969 to describe a model of population dynamics of insect pests in agricultural fields, but the idea has been most broadly applied to species in naturally or artificially fragmented habitats.

The spatiotemporal patterns of local extinctions and patch recolonizations create a shifting distribution of populations among patches. The kind of metapopulation approach depicted in Fig. 1 does not include everything that is commonly assigned to metapopulation ecology.

The population dynamics and ecology of the red—spotted newt were studied from 1974 to the present in a series of mountain ponds in the Shenandoah Mountains, Virginia. Adult and juvenile newts were censused using a combination of methods, including drift fences and dip—netting.

Metapopulation ecology

Although pure metapopulations may be rare, there are many empirical studies in which metapopulation processes, primarily local Metapopulation Ecology Saskya van Nouhuys, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland A metapopulation is a spatially structured population that persists over time as a set of local populations in balance between local extinction and colonization. Starting in 1969, and accelerating since the early 1990s, mathematical models of metapopulations Metapopulation theory states that a large population consisting of a single species is most stable over a large area when it is divided up into smaller subpopulations. These subpopulations take Metapopulation dynamics have emerged as a key consideration in conservation planning for salmonid fishes.
